Address:Pärnu maantee 326, Tallinn
Architects:1934. Friedrich Wendach ja Edgar Velbri
Von Glehn Theatre is a theater and cinema building located in the center of Nõmme. The name of the theater is derived from the name of Nikolai von Glehn, the founder of Nõmme city.
The Non-Profit Association Von Glehn Theatre took over the premises of the former Võit cinema in Nõmme (located at Pärnu Road 326), which was closed in 1996. The building has a very interesting history. The brothers Jakob and Karl Kahro started building a new cinema building to replace the old one in Nõmme in the autumn of 1931. The building was named Victoria Palace (designed by architects Friedrich Wendach and Edgar Velbri) and was opened in 1933. The cinema hall was used not only for showing films but also for organizing social events and balls. On September 30, 1940, Victoria Palace was nationalized and continued to operate as a cinema. From 1944 onwards, the building was taken over by the NKVD officer school, later serving as the Tallinn Militia Special School for years. In September 1951, the name Victoria Palace was considered too Western, and the cinema was renamed Võit, meaning ‘Victory’ in Estonian. On October 1, 1996, cinema Võit was closed, and the building was returned to the descendants of the former owners.
