Open House Tallinn 2026 partner Schindler answered our questions and reflects on good urban space.

What is an inclusive urban space that works for everyone, which we should strive for?
An inclusive urban space is one where the needs of different people are considered right from the beginning of the planning and design process. It should be accessible, comfortable, and safe for people with mobility impairments, the elderly, families with children, and everyone else. A good urban space combines functionality with high-quality architecture, creating an environment where moving around and spending time is easy and pleasant for everyone.

Which building or area in Tallinn is worth paying attention to?

The Rotermann Quarter is a great example of how historical architecture can be integrated with modern urban space and new architecture. The combination of old industrial structures and new buildings—utilizing various materials and architectural solutions—is particularly interesting. The quarter’s location and the way a previously closed industrial area has been transformed into an active, diverse urban space are also noteworthy.

Which part of a building is important and deserves more attention?
When it comes to a building, more attention could be paid to the elevator and its role in daily use. At first glance, an elevator might seem like just a small component of the entire building, but in reality, it is one of the elements people interact with most frequently. Beyond being a means of transportation between floors, it is a crucial part of the building’s accessibility, convenience, and overall user experience. It is also interesting to look at how the elevator is integrated into the building’s architecture and design, and how a functional element can support the visual concept of the entire building.
