Address:Rotermanni 6, Tallinn
Architects:2021, KOKO arhitektid
The Rotermann Quarter, located between Tallinn’s Old Town, the harbor, and Viru Square, occupies a historically significant area. The industrial complex of Rotermann, established in the 19th century, has transformed into a new urban space with carefully planned development, consciously designed to integrate well with the overall urban environment.
The latest addition to the Rotermann Quarter is the Ajamaja business building, which seamlessly blends into the surrounding industrial atmosphere. Ajamaja skillfully combines old industrial architecture with modern solutions, echoing the overall theme of the Rotermann Quarter. Special attention was given to meeting the requirements of heritage conservation in this building – old limestone walls were restored, historical load-bearing posts were preserved and incorporated into the interior design, and old glass partitions and windows were given a fresh look.
Ajamaja stands out as one of the most remarkable structures in the entire quarter, where its functionality harmonizes with the overall concept of the Rotermann complex. The building contributes to the unity of the entire Rotermann Quarter while serving its purpose as a functional and visually appealing modern space.
Sustainable Solutions (Building Futures Together):
Rotermann is the first pedestrian-oriented, car-free, and densely developed modern urban environment in Tallinn. Rotermann has always been an architectural role model and is a good example of caring and value-oriented urban development. Rotermann consists of fourteen distinctive buildings, where valuable industrial heritage from the late 19th century and early 20th century is interwoven with contemporary high-quality architecture.
