VELUX’s contribution to shaping the urban environment is expressed above all in the fact that roof windows make it possible to use existing buildings better and in more versatile ways. Attics that once stood empty become homes, workspaces or study areas, and old industrial and public buildings can be given new uses. This way, the historical layers of the urban environment are preserved, and the need to construct new buildings is reduced.

In architecture, roof windows make it possible to bring natural light and fresh air into spaces where facade windows cannot be placed. In addition, they open up an entirely new quality of space: through roof windows it is possible to view the city from places and heights that would otherwise be invisible. The space beneath the roof thus becomes not just usable additional floor area, but a space that develops a stronger connection to the surrounding urban environment, the sky and the light.

Roof windows give architects more freedom both in renovating existing buildings and in designing new ones. The school building at Karjamaa 18 is a good example of this: roof windows bring daylight to the attic floor and stairwells and make a large part of the space under the roof suitable for teaching.
