Bank of Estonia

In the latter half of the 19th century, a new city center began to develop southeast of Tallinn’s old town. By the end of the century, a market was moved here, and several buildings that continue to define the district were erected. As part of this development, several bank buildings rose, which over the decades have become the heart of Estonian finance. The most prominent buildings in the architecturally diverse quarter of Eesti Pank include the former Aadli Bank building (August Reinberg, 1904), the former Russian State Bank’s Revel office (Aleksander Jaron, 1909), and the central bank headquarters. The central bank’s headquarters, completed in 1935, is in a functionalist style with traditional elements. The building’s architects are Eugen Habermann and Herbert Johanson, with engineer Ferdinand Adoff. Functionalism also prevails in the spacious, laconic interior design. Eesti Pank was established by the Provisional Government’s decision on February 24, 1919. In addition to the central bank’s headquarters in Tallinn, branch offices of the bank operated in Estonia’s larger cities.
