The Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (EAMT) is the successor of the Tallinn Higher School of Music, founded in 1919 under the initiative of the Estonia Society (renamed Tallinn Conservatory in 1923). Theatre education has been offered at the academy continuously since 1957. The current academy complex is located at the junction of Rävala Avenue and the Pärnu Road extension, while the Department of Drama’s building is situated on Toompea at Toom-Kooli 4.

The construction of the EAMT academic building began in the early 1980s, following an architectural competition. The winning entry, titled “Trio”, was designed by Kalvi Voolaid, Kalju Luts, and Urmas Elmik. Construction started in 1990, but due to delays, the building was only completed in 1999. The complex includes 70 classrooms and auditoriums, a chamber hall, an organ hall, a library, a sound studio, and other study and work spaces.

In September 2019, the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre inaugurated a new building designed by architects Toivo Tammik and Mart Rõuk of the architectural bureau Ansambel. At its core is a 480-seat concert and theatre hall, complemented by a 112-seat black box. The new wing also houses a tower hall, numerous classrooms, studios, and workspaces.
