The Film Museum, completed in 2017 (BOA Architects, Innopolis Engineers OÜ, interior architect Ville Lausmäe), is part of the Estonian History Museum Foundation at the Maarjamäe Palace complex. The museum itself has been operating since 2006. The Film Museum introduces the filmmaking process and the history of Estonian cinema, and preserves and presents film heritage. The exhibition “Take One” offers a look at the history of Estonian film and behind the scenes of world cinema, invites visitors to explore the mysterious life of the moving image, and provides an opportunity to try out different roles within a film crew.
The layout of the museum building follows the perimeter-style development characteristic of the plot. The architects took their starting point from the existing historical building volumes, which is why the complex was visually divided into four smaller parts. The historical architecture of the palace ensemble is further tied to the new museum building by a contemporary reinterpretation of its roofscape.
