One of the most important architectural gems in the heart of Tallinn is the Estonia Theatre building, completed according to the design of Finnish architects Wivi Lönn and Armas Lindgren. Built at the initiative of the Estonia Song and Drama Society, the building originally housed not only a concert and theatre hall but also a casino, restaurant, society rooms, and business premises. The building’s original late Art Nouveau architectural style suffered severe damage in the March bombing of 1944 – only most of the walls and part of the intermediate floors survived. The grand building was restored between 1945 and 1947 in a significantly more neoclassical style, based on the design of architect Alar Kotli, and over the past 75 years it has been repeatedly expanded and modernised.
The history of the Estonia Theatre is presented by archivist and long-time Estonia member Jaak Jõekallas.
