Projekteerijate maja

Rävala pst 8, known as Projekteerijate maja (the Designers’ House), is one of the best-known modernist office buildings in Tallinn’s city centre. Built as the office building of RPI Eesti Projekt and RPI Eesti Maaehitusprojekt, it was completed in 1982 to a design by architects Peep Jänes, Arvo Niineväli and Mart Port. The complex served as the working and administrative building of the design organisations of the Estonian SSR until 1991. It then continued as an office building, where several other businesses settled in alongside the successors of the design institutes. The building consists of two tall office blocks and a lower wing facing the boulevard with retail and conference spaces. The architecture clearly reflects modernist principles: functionality, purified geometric forms, and volumetric expression. The design and construction period was long: the conceptual design was completed as early as 1965, but the building itself only in 1982. In the future, Rävala Galerii, with over 67,000 square metres of gross floor area, will rise in place of Projekteerijate maja.
