Address:Rotermanni 3, Tallinn
Architects:19th century
Rotermann Quarter is a revitalized urban area in Tallinn, situated between the old town, the port, and the city center. Once an industrial district in the 19th century, it was home to several factories, warehouses, and mills. Today, the Rotermann Quarter is known for its unique blend of historic and contemporary architecture, making it one of Tallinn’s most vibrant and stylish areas. Development of the quarter began in the early 2000s, focusing on preserving its historical character while adding modern design elements. The architects integrated the original limestone industrial buildings into the new design, combining them with bold, geometric structures made of steel, glass, and concrete. Key buildings include the renovated Rotermann grain elevator and the former salt store, which have been adapted for commercial and cultural use. The quarter’s narrow streets and courtyards create a lively atmosphere while maintaining historical continuity. The area is a successful example of urban renewal, merging Tallinn’s industrial heritage with contemporary architectural trends.
