We explore the layered architectural heritage of Kalamaja, from century-old buildings to contemporary urban design solutions. Through a walking tour, we address the durability and transience of architecture, the challenges of preserving spatial heritage, and the interpretation of urban development. We examine both the transformation of industrial buildings and the creation of new public spaces, discussing the balance between nature and the built environment and reflecting on what kind of heritage we are creating for future generations. Emphasis is placed on the aesthetic value of the environment and its sustainable development, combining respect for history with the needs of contemporary urban space.
Tour guide is Aleksandr Maier – A freelance architect with a background in art education, and a community and environmental activist. Founding member of the Society for Environment and Development and the Tallinn Nature Cooperation Centre NGO, and a member of the Northern Tallinn City Council. Focuses on designing new residential buildings and renovation projects for historic structures. Has experience in Estonian architectural offices and international residential development and construction companies.
