On October 12 and 13, architecture enthusiasts had the opportunity to visit over 40 buildings, many of which are typically closed to the public. The 6th edition of Open House Tallinn set a new attendance record, with more than 9,200 people participating in tours, workshops, and lectures over the two days.
“This number of visitors is truly remarkable. Our programme was larger than usual, and the weather was perfect for walking and exploring this year. Some of the most visited locations included the Nõmme Elevator, Kadriorg Orangery, and the Okasroosikese Castle. The Academy of Sciences was also very popular, and unfortunately, not everyone who wanted to visit could get in,” commented Aleksander Tali, the event producer.
The programme featured several buildings for the first time, while others were included again due to high demand. Repeat locations included the Kadriorg Park Orangery, the wing of Kadriorg Palace and the Presidential Bunker, the Estonian Maritime Academy, the Parliament of Estonia, and the Pelgulinna State Gymnasium. Debut buildings in the programme included the Nõmme Elevator, Okasroosikese Castle, Swissôtel, Volta Villa, the Park Tondi residential and business quarter, the Heritage Protection Department of the Tallinn Urban Planning Agency, and the Academy of Sciences. “We are certainly planning next year’s programme with the goal of including fresh sites while also bringing back locations that had high demand this year,” Tali added.
A total of 178 volunteers were involved in organizing Open House Tallinn. The programme featured 41 buildings and 18 special events. Tours were conducted in four languages: Estonian, English, Russian, and, for the first time, Estonian Sign Language. A special tactile tour for the visually impaired was also introduced. Additionally, eight international volunteers from other Open House cities in Europe participated. Open House Tallinn will take place again next year on October 11 and 12.
