Rockwool: “If we could keep our cities timeless even different generations could keep using them without hesitation”

30/07/2025

Open House Tallinn 2025 partner ROCKWOOL responded to our questions and reflected on urban spaces and future architectural heritage.

What changes should we make in urban space today to ensure that the urban environment of the future is more valuable?
Energy prices do not tend to be decreasing in the long run, so to ensure a more valuable urban environment for the future, we must prioritize energy efficiency as a key, both from regular energy sources and renewable ones. In addition to that we should focus more on sustainable designs created with sustainable materials or a long-lasting view. If we could keep our cities timeless even different generations could keep using them without hesitation. Safety – both fire and noise damage – are not the last making the impact.

Which building or area in Tallinn might become an architectural heritage for future generations?
In Tallinn, an area with the potential to become future architectural heritage is the Noblessner district. Its successful transformation from a historic industrial shipyard into a vibrant, human-centric waterfront showcases a thoughtful blend of preserved heritage and contemporary, sustainable design. This redevelopment sets a benchmark for creating dynamic and resilient urban spaces that honor the past while embracing the future.

What technology, methodology, or standard might be widely used in construction or architecture 10–15 years from now?
Looking 10-15 years ahead, the widespread adoption of circular economy principles will be the most crucial standard in construction and architecture. This involves designing buildings for disassembly and prioritizing materials that can be recycled repeatedly without degrading in quality, such as our stone wool products. A focus on circularity, combined with specifying materials that offer multiple benefits like acoustic comfort, fire resilience, and energy efficiency, will define the next generation of sustainable construction. Also technology of flat roofs to be way more used for withstand loads from renewable sources on it.

Thank You!

More interesting information: ROCKWOOL stone wool products are recognized worldwide for their quality and innovative solutions. Their insulation and construction products provide immense added value globally and create a better environment for future generations.

ROCKWOOL products are a part of Tallinn’s architectural landscape and are perfectly suited for all types of buildings, regardless of age or purpose. Educational institutions such as MUBA, MURG, and PERG have chosen ROCKWOOL products for their buildings to ensure a great learning environment for students. Did you know that, due to noise, students in classrooms miss up to one-third of what teachers say?

ROCKWOOL insulation materials are unique in that they not only offer thermal properties but also provide excellent sound insulation and fire safety for buildings. In the modern world, people spend up to 90% of their time inside buildings, making comfort in these spaces essential. Buildings must not only meet people’s architectural needs or blend with the environment but also conserve nature.

ROCKWOOL’s sustainability is reflected in their products and mission. They create products that conserve nature and provide comfort. ROCKWOOL products are made from a natural and the most abundant mineral on Earth—stone, which will never run out. Our products, mostly invisible, ensure comfort and a cleaner environment.

Whether it’s meeting building standards through emission reductions or improving infrastructure while using fewer resources, ROCKWOOL ensures a better life for future generations. At the same time, their products create additional jobs in society and enable climate change goals to be achieved without exhausting natural resources.
