Open House Tallinn 2025 partner Ruukki shares their thoughts on urban space and the architectural heritage of the future.
What changes should we make in urban space today to make it more valuable in the future?
Urban space should be a place where everyone can find their own small corner to recharge and feel good. That’s why it is important to create more diverse and distinctive recreational areas, especially in Tallinn’s apartment building districts. Many such areas have already been developed, but there is still much more to be done. Keep up the good work!
Which building or district in Tallinn could become the architectural heritage of future generations?
One strong candidate is the revitalisation of an old industrial district. The best potential lies in those areas that are being developed through architectural competitions. Today’s construction industry offers a wide range of materials and endless possibilities for processing them. It is inspiring to see how architects combine new materials with old ones – for example, Cor-Ten steel with limestone or concrete.
Which technology, method or standard is likely to be widely used in construction or architecture in 10–15 years?
One of the most important standards will certainly be the reuse of raw materials – both in the production of new construction products and in planning their future reuse. Ruukki is already using SSAB Zero, a steel that is part of the Low Carbon concept, in its production. SSAB Zero is 100% recycled steel, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions. In addition, our products are designed so that they can be disassembled and reused in new projects when necessary. This is supported by comprehensive BIM design information.
